The Ultimate 3 Day Chicago Itinerary for Families: Top Attractions, Food & Fun

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Planning a family trip to Chicago? This 3 day Chicago itinerary covers the city’s most iconic attractions, unforgettable skyline views, delicious food, and plenty of hands-on experiences for kids.

Chicago is a city that balances culture, architecture, nature, and fun—and it’s surprisingly easy to navigate, even with children in tow. With this guide, you’ll make the most of every moment.

The Best 3 Day Chicago Itinerary for Families:

Day 1: River Views, Iconic Landmarks & Millennium Park

Start your morning with a stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk, a lively waterfront path lined with public art, small cafés, and plenty of places to sit and take in the views.

Next, head to the Architecture River Cruise at 10:45 AM. This is consistently rated one of the top experiences in the city, and it’s a fantastic way to learn how Chicago became a global center for design. Kids enjoy the boat ride, and adults will love the storytelling and beauty of the skyline from the water. It’s an ideal way to kick off a 3 day Chicago itinerary because it provides context that will make the rest of the trip even more meaningful.

After the cruise, walk down Michigan Avenue, where you can stop into Nordstrom for their new Jellycat store, swing by the Harry Potter Shop for magical treats, and visit Pop Mart for collectible figurines. Be sure to grab a coffee in the largest Starbucks in the world! This stretch of the Magnificent Mile keeps kids entertained and gives parents a chance to browse and enjoy the energy of downtown Chicago.

For lunch, head to Ed Debevic’s at noon, a retro-themed diner where the servers are intentionally sassy and entertaining. It’s a quirky Chicago experience that kids absolutely love. After lunch, walk to The Bean (Cloud Gate) for the classic mirror-like photo op.

From there, wander over to Maggie Daley Park, one of the most impressive playgrounds in any U.S. city. With climbing walls, imaginative play areas, long slides, and wide-open space, it’s a paradise for kids and a great place to reset before dinner.

In the evening, you can dine at Summer House Santa Monica, where kids can make their own pizzas! We loved eating at this coastal-inspired, welcoming space.

If you prefer something uniquely Chicago, opt for deep-dish pizza at Giordano’s. Both are great choices for a family-friendly start to your trip.

Day 2: Sky-High Thrills, Colorful Creativity & Classic Chicago Eats

Begin the second day of your 3 day Chicago itinerary at Skydeck Chicago at 10:00 AM. Located atop Willis Tower, the Skydeck offers sweeping views of the entire city. Kids will be thrilled by The Ledge, a glass box that extends out from the building so you can look straight down to the street below. It’s an unforgettable experience and a highlight for many families.

From there, check out the Color Factory, an immersive art experience filled with bright, interactive rooms designed to spark joy and creativity. Confetti, colorful installations, and hands-on activities make this an ideal stop for kids and adults alike.

For lunch, try Luke’s Italian Beef, a Chicago staple known for its flavorful sandwiches piled high with thin-sliced roast beef. It’s quick, casual, and perfect for refueling before a big afternoon.

After lunch, stop into the Palmer House Hotel lobby to taste the original brownie. This is where the brownie was invented more than a century ago, and the hotel still serves the dessert using the classic recipe. It’s a fun and delicious way to experience a piece of Chicago history.

Spend the afternoon exploring the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the best art museums in the world. While it may seem daunting with children, the museum is surprisingly engaging for families. The museum guide will have a map of the highlights that you can see in one hour.

For dinner, make your way to Trivoli Tavern, an atmospheric spot known for exceptional service and beautifully crafted dishes. While not a typical “kids’ restaurant,” the welcoming staff and flavorful menu make it a great choice for families looking for something memorable.

Wrap up your day at 360 Chicago at 7:00 PM, located on the 94th floor of the former John Hancock building. This is the perfect spot to watch the city light up at night. If you’re feeling adventurous, try TILT, which slowly angles you forward over the city for a thrilling effect. It’s a totally different experience seeing the city at night.

Day 3: Museum Campus Day

For the final day of your 3 day Chicago itinerary, start at the Museum of Science and Industry, one of the largest and most interactive museums in the country. Families love exploring the U-505 submarine, navigating the mirror maze, standing inside of a simulated tornado, and exploring dozens of hands-on exhibits. You can easily spend hours here, and it’s consistently rated one of the most kid-friendly places in Chicago.

I moved this museum to earlier in the day because it closes earlier than the other museums and is located furthest away.

When you’re ready for lunch, grab a classic Chicago hot dog at the stand located outside the Field Museum. It’s quick and casual but it will give your your Chicago hot dog experience when you’re bouncing between attractions.

Head next into the Field Museum, home to Sue the T. rex, ancient Egyptian artifacts, wildlife dioramas, and massive natural-history exhibits. It’s a fascinating stop for curious kids and adults alike. This is my personal favorite stop.

Finish your museum campus day at the Shedd Aquarium, which features beluga whales, dolphins, sea otters, sharks, and penguins. The sharks are always a family favorite. This stop is essential for any 3 day Chicago itinerary focused on kid-friendly travel.

End your evening at Time Out Market, an indoor food hall that’s ideal for families because everyone can choose exactly what they want. From pizza to tacos to desserts, there’s something for every palate.

Where to Stay: Hyatt Regency Chicago

Choosing the right hotel can make or break a 3 day Chicago itinerary, especially for families. We highly recommend Hyatt Regency Chicago for its unbeatable location along the Chicago River. The hotel sits steps away from the Riverwalk, Michigan Avenue shopping, Millennium Park, and numerous restaurants, meaning you can walk to many of the stops in this itinerary.

The rooms are spacious, the service is excellent, and the convenience of staying so central makes your trip smoother and more efficient. For families who want to explore Chicago without spending excessive time in transit, Hyatt Regency Chicago is the perfect home base.
