Wyndham Gettysburg Review: A Great Hotel for Families Visiting Gettysburg

Location: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Finding a hotel that comfortably fits a family of five can be surprisingly difficult. On our recent trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, we stayed at the Wyndham Gettysburg, and our King Suite ended up being one of the better hotel configurations we have found for our family.

This was actually our first stay at a Wyndham hotel, and I was really impressed. The Wyndham Gettysburg is located just outside downtown Gettysburg, with free parking, spacious rooms, an indoor pool, and easy access to Gettysburg National Military Park. For families who want a little more space without staying right in the busy center of town, it is a great option.

Staying at the Wyndham Gettysburg With a Family of Five

One of the biggest challenges we run into when booking hotels is finding a room that comfortably sleeps five people.

You might assume that a room with two queen beds would be the obvious choice, but we have learned that those rooms often don’t have enough extra floor space for a rollaway bed. That means someone inevitably ends up uncomfortable.

At the Wyndham Gettysburg, we booked a King Suite instead, and it worked out much better.

Our suite had a king-size bed and a pull-out sofa, and there was ample room to have a rollaway bed brought in as well. This gave everyone an actual place to sleep without the room feeling completely taken over by beds.

For larger families visiting Gettysburg, I would definitely look at the suite options before automatically booking a standard room with two queen beds.

A Very Patriotic Gettysburg Hotel

The Wyndham Gettysburg definitely embraces its location.

The hotel has a grand, traditional feel with patriotic American decor throughout the property. Even our room had a stately look that reminded us a little of the Oval Office.

It felt fitting considering we had come to Gettysburg to learn about one of the most important battles in American history.

The hotel is large and has much more of a full-service hotel atmosphere than I was expecting. Since this was our first Wyndham stay, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I came away impressed with the property.

Location of the Wyndham Gettysburg

One of the advantages of staying at the Wyndham Gettysburg is its location just outside the center of town.

We loved being able to drive into Gettysburg when we wanted to explore, but then return to a quieter area at the end of the day. Parking at the hotel was also free and easy, which is always appreciated.

The location was especially convenient for visiting Gettysburg National Military Park and the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

If you are traveling with kids and have a car, I actually think being slightly outside downtown can make things easier. You don’t have to worry about finding street parking or navigating the busiest parts of town every time you leave the hotel.

Breakfast Near the Wyndham Gettysburg

One thing families should know before booking is that breakfast is not included with your stay.

Luckily, we found a great alternative practically right outside the hotel.

Gateway Family Diner is close to the Wyndham Gettysburg and makes an easy stop before heading out for a full day of sightseeing. It has exactly the kind of classic diner breakfast you want before spending several hours exploring the battlefield.

For our family, having an affordable diner nearby made the lack of complimentary hotel breakfast much less of an issue.

Indoor Pool

The Wyndham Gettysburg also has an indoor pool, which is always a huge bonus when we are traveling with kids.

After spending much of the day walking around Gettysburg and exploring the battlefield, the kids were happy to come back to the hotel and swim.

An indoor pool is particularly helpful because you don’t have to plan around the weather. Whether you are visiting during a hot Pennsylvania summer or a chilly weekend during the school year, the kids still have somewhere to burn off a little energy.

Is the Wyndham Gettysburg Good for Families?

For our family of five, the Wyndham Gettysburg worked extremely well.

The King Suite gave us much more flexibility than a traditional hotel room, and having a king bed, sleeper sofa, and rollaway meant everyone had their own sleeping space. We also appreciated the free parking, indoor pool, and convenient location just outside downtown Gettysburg.

There are hotels located closer to the shops and restaurants in the center of town, but if you are traveling with kids and have your own car, I wouldn’t consider the location a drawback. We found it easy to get everywhere we wanted to go.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that breakfast isn’t included, so you will want to factor that into your plans and budget.

Would We Stay at the Wyndham Gettysburg Again?

Yes. I would happily stay at the Wyndham Gettysburg again, especially when traveling with our family of five.

Our King Suite solved one of our biggest hotel frustrations by giving us enough room to create three separate sleeping spaces. Add in free parking, an indoor pool, and an easy drive to the battlefield and downtown Gettysburg, and it checked most of the boxes we look for in a family hotel.
