The Perfect 1 to 3 day Philadelphia Itinerary
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a city rich with early American history, is a must-visit for anyone interested in the nation’s past. As home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the Constitution was signed, it played a crucial role in the birth of the United States. Most key attractions can be covered in 1-2 days, though I also recommend a day trip to nearby Valley Forge to round out your experience. I hope this 1-3 day Philadelphia itinerary helps you plan you trip.

Philadelphia Itinerary
Day 1:
- Morning: Begin your day with a quick coffee and pastry from the Red Owl Tavern, conveniently located in the lobby of the Hotel Monaco.
- Independence Visitor’s Center: Open at 9:00 AM, this is a great starting point to gather maps, brochures, and get answers to any questions you may have. If you’re traveling with kids, be sure to pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at the National Park desk. They can complete activities throughout the day and later be sworn in as Junior Rangers, which my kids loved!
- President’s House Site: Just across the street, explore the outdoor exhibit showcasing the residence of Presidents Washington and Adams.
- The Liberty Bell: Aim to visit early to avoid the crowds. Though security lines can build up, they usually move quickly. Admission is free, and no tickets are required.
- Independence Hall: Your tour begins with a guided walk through the iconic room where the Founding Fathers debated and signed the Constitution. Be sure to allow extra time for security, as it’s recommended to arrive 30 minutes before your tour.
- Franklin Court Printing Press: Step back in time as you walk through the original alley where Ben Franklin once lived. At the Printing Press, you’ll see demonstrations of how newspapers and pamphlets were printed in the 1700s. The press operation is fascinating, showing the labor-intensive process of printing before modern technology.
- Lunch: Walk up Market Street and treat yourself to a Philly Cheesesteak at Oh Brothers, a cozy spot recommended by locals.
- Elfreth’s Alley: Wander through the oldest continuously inhabited street in the country, lined with charming Colonial-era homes.
- Betsy Ross House: A fascinating visit for history enthusiasts, this attraction offers a glimpse into the daily life of the famed seamstress.
- Christ Church Burial Ground: Pay your respects at Benjamin Franklin’s final resting place. You can see the grave from outside, so paying admission isn’t necessary unless you want a closer look.
- US Mint: Conclude the day with a self-guided tour, where you can watch coin production in progress. This quick stop takes about 30 minutes.
Day 2:
- Morning: Take an Uber to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where you can channel your inner Rocky by running up the famous steps. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping view of the city, and don’t forget to snap a photo with the Rocky statue nearby.
- LOVE Sculpture: Another short Uber ride takes you to LOVE Park, home to the iconic LOVE sculpture.
- Reading Terminal Market: Explore the endless food options at this bustling indoor market.
- Afternoon: Wrap up any activities you didn’t get to on Day 1, or return to the Visitor’s Center to have your kids sworn in as Junior Rangers. This is also a good time to relax and take in more of the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Day 3:
- Valley Forge: Head out of the city for a day trip to Valley Forge National Historical Park, located about 45 minutes away. This site was the winter encampment for George Washington’s army during the Revolutionary War. The 10-mile loop road offers nine points of interest, with historical markers and scenic spots to explore. Plan for 2-3 hours here, and kids can earn another Junior Ranger badge while learning about the hardships faced by the Continental Army.
- Lunch: Finish the day with a fantastic meal at Founding Farmers in King of Prussia, just a short drive from Valley Forge. The farm-to-table dishes and cozy atmosphere make this a dining experience you won’t want to miss.
Preparation Tips:
- Tickets for Independence Hall: Plan ahead and secure your tickets up to 30 days in advance, as they often sell out quickly. If you delay, you may find yourself stuck with less convenient time slots, making planning more difficult.

Accommodation Recommendation
I would highly recommend staying at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco. Not only is this hotel gorgeous, but it has a prime location in the historic district making it easy to walk to most of the attractions. The view from our soaking tub looked over Independence Park.
