Author Jeff Kinney is the New York time best selling author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. In 2010 it was turned into a motion picture and now he can add independent bookstore owner to his resume. An Unlikely Story Bookstore opened in 2010.
In his adopted hometown of Plainville Massachusetts, there was an old general store that had fallen into disrepair. Jeff and his wife purchased the three story building and completely rebuilt it, breathing new life in the space while holding onto the original charm.
The first floor is filled with books surrounded by whimsical displays and decorations. I love that they pay homage to the former lives that the building has had by displaying their original signs. Before becoming a bookstore, the building has been a pharmacy, a barbershop, a general store and a tearoom. If one thing has remained constant, it is that it has always served as a community gathering place.
There is a cafe with cozy seating and great coffee. Their menu offers soups, salads and sandwiches as well as great options for kids.
Upstairs is a beautiful event space where many family-friendly functions are held. I have seen everything from craft fairs to ukulele classes cycle through. For their event calendar, check their website.
My three year old loved Storytime Yoga. This 45 minute class is led by Kate Haskell from Balanced Kids Yoga. The class is designed for children ages 3-5 and included stretching, story time, a coloring activity and even some dance moves.
The Kinney fame brings in such big name authors for readings and book signings that they require a police presence. Note that if the back lot is full, there is additional parking across the intersection.
Free tours are offered for those interested, but advanced registration is required. Although Jeff Kinney’s office is within the building, a meet and greet is not included in the tour.
I would recommend signing up for the Unlikely Story Bookstore newsletter so that you can get the latest updates on special events.
The Kinney’s not only revitalized the downtown of Plainville, but made a fun place for community gatherings and learning. Bring your family to the Unlikely Store Bookstore and see for yourself what a great place it is.
