Things to Do in Woods Hole MA: A Family-Friendly Guide

Location: Woods Hole, Massachusetts

The village of Woods Hole sits at the far southwestern tip of Cape Cod. It is a quaint seaside town with coastal views, a working harbor, and walkable streets, making it the perfect place to wander on a sunny day.

What makes this village unique is its strong connection to science and the sea. Woods Hole is home to leading marine research institutions, and while most labs are not open to the public, there are several places where families can learn, explore, and get a closer look at ocean life.

If you are planning a visit, here are the best things to do in Woods Hole MA.

Things to Do in Woods Hole MA

1. Woods Hole Science Aquarium

One of the most popular things to do in Woods Hole MA is visiting the Woods Hole Science Aquarium. Established in 1875, it is the oldest public aquarium in the country.

Inside, you will find about 80 species of marine life native to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The aquarium is small and easy to navigate, making it perfect for families with younger kids.

The highlight is the seals outside, which you can view for free. Plan to spend about an hour here exploring the exhibits and learning about local marine ecosystems.

After your visit, walk over to nearby Waterfront Park. It is a peaceful place to sit, watch the boats pass by, and see the statue honoring Rachel Carson.

2. Watch the Drawbridge in Action

This bridge brings me right back to my childhood. We used to ride bikes to Woods Hole each summer to eat clam chowder at what was once called the Fish Monger and watch the bridge go up and down. It’s fascinating to watch the operation.

3. Eat on the pier at Captain Kidd

Dining at Captain Kidd is a must. Sitting on the pier with ocean views is hard to beat, especially on a warm day.

This historic spot has been welcoming visitors for over 100 years and serves up fresh seafood along with craft cocktails. It is a great place to relax and soak in the coastal atmosphere.

Fun fact: the crew of the research vessel Atlantis celebrated here after the discovery of the Titanic in 1985.

4. Visit the WHOI Visitor Center

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Visitor Center is a great stop to learn more about the research happening in the area.

You can pick up maps, ask questions, and browse ocean-themed gifts. It is a quick but worthwhile stop when exploring things to do in Woods Hole MA.

5. Explore the Ocean Science Discovery Center

This is always one of my kids’ favorite stops. The Ocean Science Discovery Center features hands-on exhibits focused on marine life and ocean exploration.

The interactive wet lab is especially fun, and kids love climbing into the replica of Alvin, a deep-sea submersible. It is both educational and engaging, making it one of the best family-friendly things to do in Woods Hole MA.

6. Stop by the Marine Biological Laboratory

This small discovery center is worth a quick visit, especially to see the axolotls. These fascinating and critically endangered creatures are always a hit with kids.

7. Walk Out to The Knob

The Knob is one of the most scenic walks in the area and easily one of the best things to do in Woods Hole MA if you love coastal views.

The trail leads to a small peninsula overlooking Quissett Harbor. It is a short walk, about ten minutes if you take the direct path, but there is also a longer shaded route through the woods that is just as beautiful.

Along the way, you will find small sandy spots and peaceful places to stop. Leashed dogs are welcome, which makes it a great outing for families traveling with pets.

On my last visit, I took this aerial photo of pretty Quissett Harbor. You can see the woodland that hooks back to the Knob in the distance. I love the sign as you enter that states:

“Cornelia L. Carey left this sanctuary for the enjoyment of all those who love to walk and take pleasure in the quiet beauty of the woods and the sea.”

8. Bike the Sea to Shining Sea Trail

Biking the Sea to Shining Sea Bike Trail is one of the most enjoyable ways to reach Woods Hole. It is arguably the prettiest part of the Cape Cod Rail trail.

This scenic trail winds through shaded forest before opening up to coastal views. There are several spots along the way where you can stop for a picnic or take a break by the water.

The trail ends in Woods Hole, where you can lock up your bikes near the ferry. Given how limited parking is, biking is easily one of the smartest things to do in Woods Hole MA.

If you stay at AutoCamp, you’ll be right on the bike trail, making it easy to ride into Woods Hole. It took us about 40 minutes to bike from our campsite.

9. Visit Nobska Point Lighthouse

Just a mile outside the village, Nobska Point Lighthouse offers stunning ocean views where Vineyard Sound meets Nantucket Sound.

Parking is limited, but if you can find a spot, it is well worth the stop. This is one of the best places in the area to catch a sunset.

10. Take a Day Trip to Martha’s Vineyard

One of the most popular things to do in Woods Hole MA is hopping on the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. The Steamship Authority gets you there in about 45 minutes. In the summer, tickets can sell out, so plan ahead.

If you can, bring your bike and explore the island on two wheels. Riding to Edgartown is a great option for families.

11. Visit Highfield Hall and Gardens

Highfield Hall and Gardens offers a mix of history, culture, and outdoor beauty.

The grounds feature walking trails, restored gardens, and open spaces where kids can explore. It is a quieter stop and a nice change of pace from the busier waterfront areas.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Woods Hole MA

Woods Hole is one of those places that keeps drawing you back year after year. Between the science centers, scenic walks, and coastal charm, there is no shortage of things to do in Woods Hole MA for families.

Parking can be tricky, especially in the summer, so one of our favorite ways to visit is by biking in on the Sea to Shining Sea Bike Trail.

Whether you spend a few hours or a full day, it is a destination that feels both relaxing and enriching.
