1. Visit the Bridges of Madison County

One of the most popular things to do in Winterset Iowa is visiting the famous covered bridges. Made well known by the 1995 film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, these historic bridges still draw visitors from all over.

There are six remaining bridges in the area, although only one is open to vehicle traffic. Even if you are not familiar with the movie, exploring these scenic spots is a fun way to experience the countryside.

2. Tour the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum

Winterset is the birthplace of John Wayne, and his legacy is celebrated at this well curated museum. Inside, you will find memorabilia, film history, and personal items that give a glimpse into his life.

Right next door is his childhood home, which you can also tour. It is small and simple, making it an easy and interesting stop, especially for older kids or movie fans.

Their apple fritters and donuts are incredible. The glazed donuts were a favorite for us and made for a perfect mid morning treat.

Walk across the Cutler Donahoe Covered Bridge, wander through the hedge maze, and find the stone bridge featured in The Bridges of Madison County.

For a little adventure, head up to Clark Tower. The drive is narrow and winding, but the view at the top is worth it. It is about a mile from the main park area, and you can also hike it if you are feeling up for it.

Across from the town square, you will find a fun alley off John Wayne Drive filled with interactive murals.

This was one of our favorite stops. Kids can pose with dragons, step into scenes, and even jump into a Nintendo themed mural. It is a quick stop but a fun way to break up the day.

For a unique dining experience, head to Montross Pharmacy. Tucked in the back of the store, you will find The Fountain, a classic diner that feels like a step back in time.
