Top 10 Things to Do in the Florida Keys for an Unforgettable Trip

Location: The Florida Keys

If you are looking for the best things to do in the Florida Keys, you are in for an unforgettable trip. This chain of tropical islands offers everything from calm beaches to wildlife encounters and unique outdoor adventures that families will love.

My family recently visited to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday. We had originally planned a Caribbean getaway, but when flights skyrocketed, we pivoted. The Florida Keys ended up being the perfect mix of easy travel and tropical beauty, and it completely exceeded our expectations.

We stayed at Hawks Cay, which had just reopened after a full renovation, and used it as our home base while exploring the many things to do in the Florida Keys.

Top 10 Things to Do in the Florida Keys

1. Relax at Mile Marker 88

This was easily one of our favorite things to do in the Florida Keys. This dreamy crescent shaped beach has palm trees offering just enough shade. The water is calm, shallow, and incredibly warm, making it perfect for younger kids.

We rented a paddle board and spent hours on the water. There is also a restaurant and outdoor bar nearby, so you can grab food and drinks and enjoy them right on the beach.

As we were all in the water, the sun started to set. It was a huge Florida sunset where the sun looks enormous and the sky turns every shade of pink. A hush came over the crowd as everyone turned to watch the sun slowly slip away. I have never seen my 5 year old rendered speechless by anything. It truly gave me the chills it was so beautiful.

2. Feeding the Tarpon at Robbie’s

This was a great place to have lunch and hang out. The atmosphere is super laid back. The deck is on the water and there are sail shades to keep the sun off of you.

There are little shops to buy souvenirs and shaved ice for dessert. But the real draw of Robbie’s is feeding the tarpon.

These fish are HUGE. You can buy a bucket of fish and see how brave you are dangling one over the wharf. The fish jump straight out of the air and grab them out of your hand.

I finally gathered the strength to try it and just as I did, a pelican came from under the wharf and grabbed it. I think it took 10 years off of my life.

3. Visit the Turtle Hospital

If you are visiting the Florida Keys with kids, the Turtle Hospital is a must. This fully functioning veterinary hospital cares for sick and injured sea turtles.

Tours are guided and last about 90 minutes. You will see turtles in recovery and learn about conservation efforts, and at the end, kids can even help feed some of the permanent residents.

Reservations are recommended since space is limited.

4. Take a Day Trip to Key West

Key West is often known for its nightlife, but there are plenty of family friendly things to do.

We visited twice and found it easy to fill a day with sightseeing, food, and exploring. It is a great mix of history, culture, and fun stops that work well for families.

5. Go on a Key Deer Safari

These tiny deer are only found in the Keys. They are endangered and very well protected. Be observant and obey speed limits.

You may see them by the roadside, but there are a few areas you can drive to that you are pretty certain to see them (see map below). They may even approach you but don’t feed them as it will only put them in danger.

6. Glass Bottom Boat Tour at John Pennenkamp State Park

For families with younger kids, this is one of the best things to do in the Florida Keys if snorkeling feels like too much.

The glass bottom boat lets you see coral reefs and marine life without getting in the water. The park also has a beach and playground, making it easy to spend a full day here.

7.  Visit the Dolphin Research Center

If interacting with dolphins is on your list of things to do in the Florida Keys, this is the place to go.

The focus here is on education and conservation rather than entertainment. You can watch training sessions or upgrade your visit to participate in a hands on experience.

8. Explore Dry Tortugas National Park

One of the most adventurous things to do in the Florida Keys is visiting Dry Tortugas. Located 67 miles west of Key West, it is only accessible by ferry or seaplane.

The Yankee Freedom III ferry takes one trip to the island each day. Check-in time is 7 AM and arrives at the island at 10:15. It departs at 3:00 and arrives back at Key West at 5:15 PM.

You will dock at Fort Jefferson, which was used as a prison during the Civil War. There are no bathroom facilities on the island, but the ferry will stay with you so you can use the bathrooms and they will provide lunch.

If that is not enough time, you can arrange to camp overnight.

9. Watch the sunset at Sunset Grille & Raw Bar

Sunset Grille hosts a poolside BBQ every weekend starting at 1:00. It’s a great place to sit and watch the sunset over the famous seven mile bridge.

Sit back and listen to the live music or join in a corn hole tournament. It is a great way to end the day, especially with a slice of key lime pie.

10. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm

This is one of the most unique things to do in the Florida Keys. Located at a detention center, this animal farm rescues and cares for animals while also providing a therapeutic program for inmates.

The animal farm began in 1994 when the jail rescued a group of ducks. Word got out that they were taking in animals and before they knew it, they had rescued 150 homeless animals in their care. There is a great video about their story you can watch by clicking here.

It is open to the public twice a month and free to visit. Kids will love seeing the animals, and it is a great opportunity to support a program that is doing good in multiple ways.
