10 Fun Things to Do in Omaha, Nebraska with Kids

After spending a few days in Kansas City, we made the three hour drive north to Omaha and quickly realized how much this city has to offer. Omaha is known as the birthplace of Malcolm X, the home of the Reuben sandwich, and often called the Gateway to the West. It ended up being one of our favorite stops on the trip.

1. Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

One of the top things to do in Omaha Nebraska is visiting the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. It is consistently ranked among the best zoos in the world and absolutely lives up to the hype. The zoo is large, so plan to spend a full day here and wear comfortable shoes.

Some of our favorite experiences included the Desert Dome, feeding the stingrays, and watching the animals from the Durham TreeTops Restaurant overlooking the Lied Jungle. Sitting down for lunch while watching gibbons swing through the trees was such a fun and memorable moment for the kids.

2. The Durham Museum

The Durham Museum is another must when looking for things to do in Omaha Nebraska. Located in a beautifully restored historic train station, it truly feels like stepping back in time.

The architecture alone is worth the visit, but the exhibits make it even better. Kids will love exploring the vintage train cars, including a Pullman car and caboose from the 1940s and 50s. Before leaving, stop at the original soda fountain for a classic chocolate malt.

3. Bob Pedestrian Bridge

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge is one of the most unique things to do in Omaha Nebraska. This 3,000 foot bridge connects Nebraska to Iowa, and you can stand with one foot in each state.

Be sure to walk underneath the bridge to find OMAR, the friendly blue troll, which is always a hit with kids.

4. Old Market

The Old Market is one of the most charming areas in Omaha. Cobblestone streets, local shops, and restaurants make it a great place to explore.

Stop into the Old Market Candy Shop for a “mudball,” browse the nostalgic finds at Hollywood Candy, and grab ice cream at Ted and Wally’s. If you visit on a Saturday, you can also enjoy the farmers market.

5. Joslyn Castle

For a little history, Joslyn Castle is a great stop. This 35 room mansion was once home to George and Sarah Joslyn, who played a major role in shaping Omaha.

George Joslyn made his fortune running the Western Newspaper Union. When he passed away in 1916, he left behind a $10 million legacy (over $200 million today). His wife Sarah continued their philanthropy doing everything she could to better the surrounding area. They say you can’t throw a stone in Omaha and not hit something that was impacted by them.

Tours are about an hour and offer a fascinating look at the family’s legacy and the history of the area. It is one of the more unique things to do in Omaha Nebraska if you enjoy historic homes.

6. Lauritzen Gardens

Located just minutes from the zoo, Lauritzen Gardens is a beautiful botanical garden and arboretum. While it might be tempting to pair it with the zoo in one day, you may want to plan a separate visit. There is so much to see at both places, it would be hard to combine them.

Lauritzen Gardens has a tram that will drive you through the sprawling property. It is well worth the extra cost, especially with kids. It makes it easy to explore the gardens without too much walking. The model railroad garden was a highlight for us, and in the spring, the fields of daffodils are stunning.

7. The Omaha Children’s Museum

If you are traveling with younger kids, the Omaha Children’s Museum is one of the best things to do in Omaha Nebraska. This interactive space is designed for hands-on learning and play.

It is a great option for a rainy day or when you need a break from outdoor activities.

8. Stay at the Historic Cottonwood Hotel

Where you stay can be just as memorable as what you do. The Cottonwood Hotel offers a boutique experience at a surprisingly reasonable price.

The pool area alone made us rethink our entire itinerary. We ended up spending so much time there that we canceled other plans. The hotel is also pet friendly and offers a daily wine hour, which is a nice touch for parents.

9. Eat Butter Brickle Ice Cream

Trying butter brickle ice cream is one of those classic things to do in Omaha Nebraska that you should not skip. This flavor was actually invented in Omaha in the 1920s. We decided to make it a nightly tradition during our stay.

Word on the street is that Coneflower Creamery has the best butter brickle ice cream in town.

10. The Amazing Pizza Machine

For a fun and easy outing, The Amazing Pizza Machine is a great choice. It combines arcade games, laser tag, and a buffet, making it a hit with kids of all ages.

It is a perfect way to let kids burn off energy while parents relax a bit.

Omaha truly surprised us with how much there is to do. From world class attractions to simple family fun, there is no shortage of things to do in Omaha Nebraska. If you are planning a Midwest trip, this city is absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.
