The Best Things to do in North Conway, NH

Visiting North Conway, New Hampshire is one of our favorite family trips to take because there is so much to do for all ages. While there is plenty to do in the area year round, we love starting our summer here. It’s not too hot and the crowds are low. These are the best things to do in North Conway, NH.

The Best Things to do in North Conway, NH

1. Storyland

This beloved amusement park is designed for children up to 12 years old. Story Land brings fairy tales to life with rides, shows, and interactive attractions.

It’s a magical place where little ones can meet their favorite storybook characters. Lizzie loved having tea with Cinderella and the boys loved the raft ride.

The Moo Lagoon Water park just opened up in Storyland in 2024, so pack your bathing suit! The water slides and splash pad are the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day.

Hot tip: if you purchase a ticket after 2:00 pm, you will receive a return ticket for any other day that season! We used to do this when the kids were very small. It allowed us to cover one corner of the park before it closed and then have a full day to explore on the following day. It makes it less overwhelming for those little legs to cover so much ground.

2. North Conway Scenic Railway

Take a step back in time with a ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad. This historic train offers various excursions through the picturesque landscapes of the White Mountains, including a Notch Train ride that travels through dramatic mountain passes.

We love riding the Gertrude Emma. This beautifully restored 1898 Pullman train ride takes just under an hour, which is the perfect length for my kids. The wide wicker chairs are really comfortable. Try to sit on the side furthest from the train station for the scenic views.

3. Stroll Main Street

The Main Street of North Conway has many shops and restaurants. The kid’s favorite stop is the Toy Chest. Zeb’s General Store is a local favorite that offers an old-fashioned shopping experience. From nostalgic candies to unique New England-made products, Zeb’s is a treasure trove of delightful finds.

There is also a large park in front of the railway station with a nice playground and splash pad.

4. Diana’s Baths

This is our favorite family-friendly hike. The Diana’s Baths trail is just a 0.6 mile easy hike that leads to beautiful waterfalls. It took us about 20 minutes to walk and we ended up staying for close to three hours.

On a hot day, it is the best place to cool off. There are several waterfalls that create safe little pools for kids to splash and play in. I would recommend wearing water shoes because the rocks can get slippery.

The greatest challenge in visiting Diana’s Bath is the parking. The lot fits 40 cars and it is illegal to park on the street. So when it is full, your only option is to wait for someone to leave or try back later.

Really, this is a blessing because the falls will never be overcrowded. The earlier in the day you go, the better your chances are. It is $5 to park and you can pay by credit card. There are bathrooms by the parking lot.

5. Cathedral Ledge

Cathedral Ledge offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, accessible by both car and foot. It’s a popular spot for sightseers and rock climbers, providing breathtaking vistas and challenging climbs.

It is a short drive to the top and doesn’t cost anything. The drive is not scary as you head up through the woods, but if you are afraid of heights, walking out to the ledge might be a challenge.

6. Echo Lake State Park

Relax by the crystal-clear waters of Echo Lake, where you can swim, picnic, or simply enjoy the serene surroundings. The park also offers hiking trails with views of Cathedral Ledge.

Echo Lake State Park is open from 9 AM to 6 PM. Parking reservations are highly recommended as parking is limited. Pets are permitted throughout the back trails in the Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge areas only. Pets are not allowed at Echo Lake from May 1 to Oct. 31. And just to save you from some confusion… there is also an Echo Lake in nearby Franconia Notch State Park.

There are charcoal grills and plentiful picnic tables available for use.

Cost of Echo Lake State Park (per person, per day):

Day Use Fees:
Adult:
 12 and over $4, age 65 and over $0
Child: 5 & under – $0, 6-11, $2

Address:
68 Echo Lake Road, North Conway, NH 03860

7. Cranmore Mountain Resort

This adventure park is just as fun in the summer as it is in the winter. We had the best time going down the mountain coaster which is an upgraded alpine slide. I think my kids did it 10 times.

Harry and I worked up the bravery to do the soaring eagle which was a blast. It is like a zip line going down the mountain. Lizzie loved all of the climbing walls and bounce houses.

Andrew’s favorite was summer tubing. To end the day, we took the scenic chairlift up the mountain and even saw a mother deer and her fawn on the way up. At the top of the mountain, there is a cafe with cold drinks and ice cream.

8. Saco River Tubing

In the warmer months, the Saco River is perfect for kayaking, canoeing, and tubing. Rentals and guided tours are readily available, making it easy to enjoy a leisurely paddle or a fun float down the river.

9. Kancamagus Highway

Renowned for its breathtaking views, the Kancamagus Highway is a must-drive. This scenic byway offers numerous overlooks, picnic spots, and trailheads, making it perfect for a day of exploration. One of our favorite easy hikes with the kids is Sabbaday Falls.

10. Pirate’s Cove Mini Golf

A fun destination for families, Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf offers a creatively designed mini-golf course with a pirate theme. It’s a great place for some light-hearted competition and family fun.

11. Settlers Green

For those who love shopping, Settlers Green Outlet Village offers a wide range of stores from popular brands, along with dining options and seasonal events.

Some of our favorite places to eat in North Conway are The Moat (try the nachos with mango chutney!), Abenaki Trail Restaurant & Pub which doesn’t look like much from the outside but has been rated #1 on Tripadvisor for over ten years and The Flatbread Company for the yummiest of pizzas.
