If you are looking for memorable things to do in Kuching, you are in for a treat. This vibrant city in Malaysian Borneo blends culture, wildlife, and incredible food in a way that feels both exciting and approachable for travelers. After visiting, I can confidently say that Kuching is one of Southeast Asia’s most underrated destinations.
From riverside strolls to rainforest adventures, here are the best things to do in Kuching.

The Best Things to do in Kuching, Sarawak
1. Explore Kuching’s Historic Waterfront
One of the top things to do in Kuching is to start at the scenic Kuching Waterfront. This lively promenade runs along the Sarawak River and offers beautiful views of the Astana, the gold-domed building across the water.
You can hop on a traditional wooden boat for a quick river crossing or enjoy a relaxing river cruise. Stop by James Brooke Cafe for a drink or light meal while taking in the atmosphere.
Just behind the waterfront, Jalan Main Bazaar is filled with small shops and local finds. At one end, you will reach the Old Courthouse, now a cultural complex. At the other, you will find Tua Pek Kong, a historic Chinese temple dating back to 1843.

2. Visit the Borneo Cultures Museum
The Borneo Cultures Museum is one of the most impressive attractions and easily one of the best things to do in Kuching for families.
The exhibits are interactive and thoughtfully designed, showcasing the traditions and history of Borneo’s many ethnic groups. Kids will especially enjoy the Children’s Gallery, while adults will appreciate the depth of information.
One of the most fascinating displays is the skull of the Niah Lady, believed to be around 37,000 years old.

3. Shop for Textiles at Tanoti
If you are looking for unique things to do in Kuching, a visit to Tanoti is worth the effort, even if it takes a little searching to find.
This textile studio specializes in traditional handwoven pieces created by local Dyak artisans. Each design is inspired by dreams and is never repeated, making every piece truly one of a kind.
I brought home a crocodile-pattern textile that now sits on my desk and always reminds me of this experience.
4. Get a Traditional Hand-Tap Tattoo
For something completely different, one of the more unique things to do in Kuching is visiting Borneo Headhunters Tattoo Studio.
Artist Ernesto Kalum practices traditional hand-tap tattooing, an art form deeply rooted in Iban culture. If you are interested in meaningful travel experiences, this is a memorable way to connect with local traditions.
5. Have a Drink at The Bear Garden
The Bear Garden is not just a fun place to grab a drink, it is also a way to support conservation efforts.
This open-air bar donates a portion of its profits to help protect Borneo’s sun bears. It is one of those feel-good things to do in Kuching where you can relax and give back at the same time.
6. Visit the Sarawak Cultural Village
For a deeper cultural experience, head to the Sarawak Cultural Village. This living museum showcases traditional homes, dance performances, and hands-on activities.
It is one of the most educational things to do in Kuching and a great stop for families who want to learn more about the region’s diverse heritage.
7. Savor the Local Cuisine
No list of things to do in Kuching would be complete without mentioning the food. The city is known for its incredible flavors and local specialties.
Be sure to try Sarawak Laksa, a rich and aromatic noodle soup, and Kolo Mee, a simple but delicious noodle dish. Kuching is truly a food lover’s destination.

8. Visit Semenggoh Wildlife Centre
One of the most meaningful things to do in Kuching is visiting Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, where rescued orangutans are rehabilitated.
Seeing these incredible animals in a semi-wild environment is unforgettable. Keep in mind that during fruiting season, orangutans may not appear for feeding, which is actually a positive sign that they are thriving independently.
9. Explore Bako National Park
Bako National Park was the highlight of my trip and one of the most adventurous things to do in Kuching.
A short boat ride brings you to this incredible park, where you can hike through different ecosystems and spot wildlife like proboscis monkeys. The mix of jungle, cliffs, and beaches makes it feel like several destinations in one.

10. Discover Sarawak’s Caves
If you are up for an adventure, exploring the caves around Kuching is a must.
Gunung Mulu National Park is home to the Sarawak Chamber, the largest cave chamber in the world. Closer to Kuching, Fairy Cave near Bau is an easier option and still incredibly impressive.
11. Watch the Sunset at Santubong Peninsula
For a slower pace, head to the Santubong Peninsula. This is one of the most relaxing things to do in Kuching and the perfect place to end your day.
The sunsets here are beautiful and make for great photos, especially with Mount Santubong in the background.
12. Spot the Famous Cat Statues
Kuching literally means cat, which is why the city is often called Cat City.
You will find cat statues all over town, and there is even a dedicated cat museum. It is a fun and quirky addition to your list of things to do in Kuching, especially if you are traveling with kids.
Kuching offers a mix of culture, wildlife, and laid-back charm that is hard to find anywhere else. Whether you are exploring temples, spotting orangutans, or just enjoying the waterfront, there are so many incredible things to do in Kuching that make it well worth a visit.
