Located in City Market, the Arabia Steamboat Museum is one of the most fascinating things to do in Kansas City. As the American frontier expanded west, steamboats were used to transport supplies along the Missouri River. On September 5, 1856, the Arabia sank on its maiden voyage carrying more than 200 tons of cargo.

Over 130 years later, a father and his sons set out to recover what many believed had been lost forever. Amazingly, the steamboat was discovered buried beneath a cornfield after the river changed course. It took 4 1/2 months to excavate what is now the largest collection of pre-civil war artifacts in the world.

Today, the artifacts are on display and remarkably well preserved. From fine china to a jar of pickles, it feels like stepping back in time. Kids especially love the real-life treasure hunting story, making this one of the most unique things to do in Kansas City.
