The Best Things to Do in Harvard Square: A Family Friendly Guide
If you are looking for fun and educational things to do in Harvard Square, this lively area in Cambridge is a perfect choice for a family day trip. Just across the river from Boston, Harvard Square blends history, culture, and entertainment in a way that keeps both kids and adults engaged.
From street performers to bookstores and museums, there are so many things to do in Harvard Square that you can easily spend an entire day exploring.

The trickiest part about visiting Harvard Square is parking. I try to hit up the Church Street public lot next to Starbucks. Ditch the stroller if possible. It is more of a hindrance on the brick walkways and crowded sidewalks.
The Best Things to do in Harvard Square
1. Explore Harvard University (aka Hahvahd Yahd)
One of the most iconic things to do in Harvard Square is to walk through Harvard Yard. The historic campus is beautiful in every season and gives kids a glimpse into one of the most well known universities in the country.
Stop by the John Harvard Statue, often called the “Statue of Three Lies,” and let your kids join in the tradition of rubbing the foot for good luck.
If time allows, take a tour. The free, student-led public walking tour through Harvard Yard provides a history of the University, general information, and a unique view on the students’ individual experience. All tours are 45 to 60 minutes long and advanced registration is required.

2. The Harvard Museum of Natural History
The Harvard Museum of Natural History might be my favorite museum in the Boston area and one of the best things to do in Harvard Square with kids. It is smaller in size, which makes it easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed, but it is packed with fascinating exhibits that keep kids engaged from start to finish.
My kids love bringing a notebook so they can sketch what they see, and they were completely captivated by the mastodon. The kronosaurus, a 42 foot long prehistoric marine reptile, is another highlight.
I would also recommend checking out Nature Story Time, typically held at 11 am and 2 pm in the Dinosaur Hall, although it is always a good idea to check the schedule ahead of your visit.

3. Visit The Harvard Coop
A visit to Harvard Square is not complete without browsing this classic bookstore and shop. The Harvard Coop has a huge selection of books, Harvard gear, and gifts.
Kids will enjoy picking out a book or a sweatshirt, and it is a great place to find a meaningful souvenir.
4. Play at Alexander W. Kemp Playground
If you are visiting with younger kids, this playground is one of the best things to do in Harvard Square when they need a break from walking. Located right near Cambridge Common, Alexander W. Kemp Playground is a well maintained space with climbing structures, swings, and plenty of room to run around.
It is an easy stop to add into your day and a great way to let kids burn off some energy before heading back to explore more of Harvard Square.
5. Browse Beadworks
If you enjoy creative activities, this colorful shop is one of the most fun things to do in Harvard Square. Beadworks is filled with beads of every shape and color, and it is easy to spend time picking out favorites to design a bracelet or necklace.
It is a great hands on stop that feels a little different from typical souvenir shopping, and kids love leaving with something they created themselves.
6. See a film at the Brattle Theater
The Brattle Theatre is a historic, independent cinema known for showing classic films, international movies, and special themed screenings.
If you have older kids or teens, this can be a fun way to slow down and enjoy something a little different from the usual activities. It adds a cultural element to your day and is a great option if you are visiting in the evening or looking for something indoors.
7. Watch Street Performers
One of the most fun and unexpected things to do in Harvard Square is simply to slow down and watch the street performers. Musicians, magicians, and artists often gather in the plaza, creating an energetic atmosphere that kids love.
It feels a bit like a live show that you stumble upon, and it adds to the charm of the area.
8. Browse Independent Shops
There are so many unique shops tucked into Harvard Square. From quirky gift stores to record shops and boutiques, browsing is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Harvard Square.
You never know what you will find, and it keeps kids curious as you explore.
9. Grab a Bite to Eat
Food is a big part of the experience, and trying local favorites is one of the best things to do in Harvard Square.
Stop by Mr. Bartley’s Gourmet Burgers for creative burgers that are fun for the whole family. For something sweet, J.P. Licks is always a hit with kids.
There are also plenty of casual cafes if you want something quick and easy.
10. Catch a Show at American Repertory Theater
If you are visiting in the evening, consider checking out a performance. While not every show is geared toward kids, some productions are family friendly and can be a memorable way to end your visit.
Tips for Visiting Harvard Square
Harvard Square is very walkable, so comfortable shoes are a must. Parking can be tricky, so taking public transportation is often the easiest option. The area is busy on weekends, but that energy is part of what makes it so fun.
If you are planning your list of things to do in Harvard Square, try to arrive early and build in time to wander. Some of the best moments come from exploring without a strict plan.
Why Harvard Square is Perfect for Families
What makes Harvard Square special is the mix of history, culture, and everyday fun. There are plenty of things to do in Harvard Square that appeal to kids, while still feeling interesting for adults.
