Red Lion Inn Review: A Family Stay in Stockbridge, Massachusetts

Location: Stockbridge, Massachusetts

The Red Lion Inn is a historic landmark located on Main Street in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. With its roots dating back to 1773, this inn is synonymous with the Berkshires and has become an enduring symbol of the region’s charm and hospitality.

Whether you stay overnight, enjoy a meal in the tavern, or relax on the front porch, this Red Lion Inn review will show why it deserves a spot on your Berkshires itinerary.

Location and First Impressions

Situated in the heart of Stockbridge, the Red Lion Inn is so picturesque that it has been immortalized in a Norman Rockwell painting. The classic New England architecture, with its white clapboard exterior and welcoming front porch, gives you the feeling of stepping back in time.

As you stroll along Main Street, you will find charming cafes, boutiques, and antique shops that add to the town’s appeal. The children’s chime tower is about a ten-minute walk from the inn, making it an easy and family-friendly outing.

Rooms and Suites

We booked a queen suite, which ended up being the perfect setup for our family. The suite featured two queen beds and a separate sitting area, something that is not always easy to find in historic properties.

This layout worked especially well for traveling with kids. Our baby had a quiet place to sleep, while our older children had space to play and unwind. The extra room also gave us space for a desk area and a spot for the kids to build Legos, which made a big difference during downtime.

Amenities for Families

One of the highlights of our stay, and something worth mentioning in any Red Lion Inn review, was the outdoor heated pool. The kids were eager to jump in as soon as we arrived, and even in the fall, the water was warm and comfortable. There is also a hot tub, which is a nice bonus for parents.

After swimming, the kids loved warming up in the soaking tub back in our room. The large marble bathroom offered a mix of modern comfort and historic charm, with original-style fixtures that added character to the space.

Dining at the Red Lion Inn

We had dinner on the front porch, which ended up being one of the most memorable parts of our stay. The setting was beautiful, especially with the mild weather, and the food exceeded expectations.

Even our picky eaters found something they loved. The menu offers a variety of options, and I highly recommend trying their signature drink, the Front Porch, if you are looking to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

The inn also offers several dining options, including the Main Dining Room, a rustic tavern, and the Lion’s Den pub in the basement, which features pub fare and live entertainment.

A Touch of History and Mystery

After hearing ghost stories at The Mount, the kids were curious whether the Red Lion Inn had any ghostly visitors of its own. Opened in 1773, the inn’s walls have certainly seen their fair share of history.

Our waitress mentioned that there is one room rumored to be haunted. Naturally, the boys became determined to find out which one. When we asked at the front desk, one employee said he hadn’t heard of a haunted room, but another laughed and quietly whispered, “301.”

Apparently, you can request that room, although we couldn’t get any more details from the staff. We did walk by it, but didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. If you have any insider stories, I would love to hear them.

Breakfast and Final Thoughts

The next morning, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast in the Main Dining Room before heading out to explore more of the Berkshires.

This Red Lion Inn review would not be complete without saying how well this property balances history with comfort. It offers a unique experience that feels both nostalgic and welcoming for families.

Be sure to peek at the guest book. Just days after Henry Longfellow pulled up in his stage coach during the summer of 1860, Henry Melville checked in a few days later. The Red Lion Inn has been an icon for just that long.

If you are planning a trip to the Berkshires, the Red Lion Inn is a great place to stay, especially if you want a central location with plenty of charm. It is the kind of place that creates lasting memories for both kids and adults.
