I have been dreaming of my visit to The Porches Inn ever since I took a trip there with my dog. It is the type of place that makes you want to go back time and time again. The Porches is easily my favorite hotel in North Adams MA.
On this trip to the Berkshires, we loaded up the three kids and the dog and headed west. We followed the winding mountain road down to North Adams and checked into The Porches.
The Porches in North Adams was built to house the influx of people coming out to visit The Mass Moca. This amazing contemporary art museum really breathed life into this old mill town. The inn is located within walking distance.
What once was a strip of run-down Victorian row houses was beautifully resorted into what is now the Porches Inn. Some of the houses are even connected with glass, so while you are technically walking between houses, you are actually inside. If you appreciate architecture and engineering, you will be amazing with what they accomplished.
And yet even with all of the modern updates, The Porches has this cozy feel to it that reminds me of a trip to Grandmas. There is a plate of chocolate chip cookies in the lobby and fresh cut flowers in the rooms. I have always been welcome with hand written notes by the bedside.
Since we had Katouche with us, we stayed in the building that allows dogs. If you have allergies or don’t like being around dogs, don’t worry, you will be in a dog free building.
I was so excited to stay in a loft room with a spiral staircase. Finding hotel rooms for a family of five is always a challenge but these rooms can accommodate up to six people. When we have three kids running around and then throw a dog into the mix, we really value having that space to spread out.
The main floor of our room had a bedroom with en-suite bathroom that we could close off with sliding doors. The retro furniture looks like it was found at an antique fair and no two rooms are alike.
There was a living room area with a sofa bed and a spiral staircase that led up to a loft.
The kids loved having their own private floor, which was immediately declared “kids only.” They had a full sized bed, a full bathroom and a TV. Both bathrooms had jacuzzi-style tubs.
We were there at the end of the fall and it was pretty cold out. But that didn’t stop our kids from wanting to swim in the outdoor heated pool. We put on bathrobes and made a run for it. The pool felt amazing, but then we couldn’t get out. The kids finally went streaking and screaming back to the room soaking wet and freezing cold.
They needed a long hot bath after that experience, but it was one of their favorite parts of the trip.
The pool is this beautiful slate with a wooded background. It’s such a serene setting. There is a hot tub as well, but that is closed due to covid. The pool is open with time slots to distance people but we were the only idiots that dreamed of actually using it.
The grounds of the inn are such a nice place to walk your dog. There is a fire pit area with a trail that leads up through the woods. It is a bit steep on the way down, but you can do a perfect circuit and end up where you started. I also love that it is lit up at night for the late night potty breaks.
There is so much to do in the Berkshires. The kids favorite activities were visiting the natural land bridge, making a creation in Kidspace at the Mass Moca and running across the water at The Clark. We also drove to the top of Mt. Greylock for the most beautiful foliage views.

The Porches Inn has such a cool eclectic vibe that I have yet to find anywhere else. I love how kid and dog friendly it is while still feeling like you are in an upscale place. It is stylish without the stuffiness. There are so many ways to describe The Porches Inn, but I just like to call it home.
