Northeast Kingdom in Vermont: Best Things to Do on the Scenic Byway

Location: Vermont

The Northeast Kingdom in Vermont is one of the most scenic and peaceful regions in New England. Rolling hills stretch for miles, dotted with farms and grazing cows, creating postcard-worthy views at every turn. If you are looking for a slower pace and authentic Vermont charm, the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont delivers.

One of the best ways to explore the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont is by driving the Northeast Kingdom Scenic Byway. This 51 mile route runs from St. Johnsbury to Newbury and is filled with memorable stops for families. Here are some of our favorite things to do along the way.

The Best Things to Do in the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont

1. Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, St. Johnsbury

The Fairbanks Museum is a great first stop, especially for families. The Victorian building is beautiful, and inside you will find a mix of natural history exhibits, a planetarium, and even a quirky bug art collection. There is also a small hands-on area for kids.

2. St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, St. Johnsbury

This historic library feels like something out of Harry Potter. A wooden spiral staircase leads to shelves filled with books, and the attached art gallery features 19th century works.

3. Dog Mountain, St. Johnsbury

Dog Mountain is one of the most meaningful places to visit in the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont. Created by artist Stephen Huneck, it celebrates the bond between people and their dogs. The property includes a dog chapel, walking trails, a pond, and an art gallery. Dogs are welcome, which makes it even better for people traveling with their four-legged family members.

4. Northeast Kingdom Artisans Guild, St. Johnsbury

Support local artists at this wonderful shop featuring work from over 100 artisans. You will find everything from pottery to photography, making it a great place to pick up a meaningful souvenir.

I fell in love with the whimsical illustrations by Jess Polanshek as well as Mary Stone’s clay whistles. Not only will you find something really unique, but you will be supporting the local community.

5. Eat Pie at Anthony’s Diner, St. Johnsbury

If you are craving a classic diner experience, this is the place. Anthony’s serves a wide selection of homemade pies, and the chocolate cream pie is worth the stop.

6. Northeast Kingdom Tasting Center, Newport

This is a great place to take a break along the scenic byway. You can enjoy local craft beer, sample regional products, and pick up Vermont favorites like maple syrup and cider. There is also a bakery and candy shop, making it an easy win with kids.

7. Walk Along Lake Memphremagog, Newport

Lake Memphremagog is a highlight of the region. This beautiful 30 mile lake stretches into Canada, and the waterfront in Newport is perfect for a relaxed walk or a quick picnic.

8. Shop at the Pick and Shovel, Newport

This is one of those classic Vermont general stores that has a little bit of everything. One aisle you are looking at hardware and suddenly you are in the lingerie section and a parrot is talking to you. We had so much fun wandering both floors of this place, because we never knew what to expect when we turned a corner.

9. Get a Creemee at Tim and Doug’s, Newport

The ice cream window opens for the season in mid-March and although there were several feet of snow still on the ground, the line for Tim & Doug’s was a mile long. Try a creemee which is Vermont’s version of soft serve, but creamier (hence the name). I have yet to try one because I can’t pass up on my favorite Maple Walnut flavor.

No visit to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont is complete without trying a creemee. Tim and Doug’s is a local favorite, with long lines even in colder weather.

10. Have a magical stay in the Vermont Treehouse, Newport

For a truly unique experience, consider staying at the Vermont Treehouse. Tucked deep in the woods, it offers total privacy and a peaceful setting. The cedar hot tub overlooking the pond is a highlight, and the homemade waffle fixings with Vermont maple syrup make mornings feel extra special. I am already dreaming of going back.

11. The Inn at Mountain View Farm, Burke

The Inn at Mountain View Farm offers a charming stay with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Set on a 440 acre historic estate, the property is both peaceful and full of opportunities for adventure.

On the property, you will also find an animal sanctuary that is home to rescued donkeys, horses, cows, sheep, and goats. Tours are available by appointment and are especially fun for kids.

Miles of Kingdom Trails run right through the farm, making it a dream spot for mountain biking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Burke Mountain is just a short drive away, offering lift access for downhill biking and excellent skiing in the winter. Whether you are looking to relax or stay active, this is a beautiful home base for exploring the area.

12. Skiing Burke Mountain

Burke Mountain is a favorite for families visiting the Northeast Kingdom in winter. It has a laid back atmosphere, manageable crowds, and a great mix of terrain for all skill levels. Beginners will feel comfortable on the gentle slopes, while more experienced skiers can explore longer, more challenging runs.

On a clear day, the views stretch across the Northeast Kingdom and are worth the trip alone.

13. Mountain Biking with Kingdom Trails

When the snow melts, the Northeast Kingdom transforms into a mountain biking destination. Kingdom Trails is known nationwide, offering more than 100 miles of trails that range from easy rides to more technical routes.

Families will love the beginner friendly paths that wind through farmland and forests, with plenty of scenic spots to stop along the way.

14. Sanderson Wooden Bowls, East Burke

A visit to Sanderson Wooden Bowls offers a unique look at traditional Vermont craftsmanship. This small, family-run workshop creates beautiful wooden bowls using time-honored techniques. Watching the process is fascinating for all ages, and the finished pieces make meaningful souvenirs from your time in the Northeast Kingdom.

They also have a very friendly herd of goats and miniature donkeys that love visitors, which is always a hit with kids.
