Lumen Nature Retreat Review: A Cozy Riverside Escape in the White Mountains

Location: Woodstock, New Hampshire

There are some trips where you pack your itinerary full of activities and adventure. Then there are the trips where you realize what you really need is quiet. That is exactly what brought me to the Lumen Nature Retreat for a solo weekend in the White Mountains with my dog.

Lumen Nature Retreat Review

I had been craving solitude, fresh mountain air, and the sound of rushing water instead of notifications. The moment I arrived at Lumen Nature Retreat, I knew I had found exactly what I was looking for.

Before checking in, my dog and I spent the day hiking around the White Mountains. We stopped at The Basin and then headed to Artist Bluff Trail for one of my favorite short hikes in the area.

By the time we arrived at Lumen Nature Retreat for the 4:00 check-in, I was more than ready to unwind.

I stayed in one of the hygge cabins called Ingrid, and it could not have been more peaceful. The cabin sat right beside a river, and honestly, all I wanted to do the entire weekend was sit in an Adirondack chair with a book and a glass of wine and listen to the water.

The large glass picture window made the outdoors feel like part of the cabin itself. A buttery leather couch faced the river, creating the perfect place to curl up and relax. There was also a vintage Marshall radio and even a guitar inside the cabin, which added to the cozy atmosphere.

The bed was incredibly comfortable, and there was a second bed tucked away in the loft area. The cabin also included a small kitchenette for simple meals and snacks.

One thing to note is that there is no running water inside the cabin itself, but the nearby bath house was spotless and surprisingly luxe. It had excellent hot showers and felt more boutique hotel than campground.

One of my favorite parts of Lumen Nature Retreat was the sauna experience. After a long day of hiking, I headed to the Nordic sauna and immediately felt every muscle relax.

The next afternoon, I tried the barrel sauna overlooking the pond, which I loved even more. Sitting in the warmth while looking out over the water was one of the most peaceful moments of the entire trip.

For dinner, I drove into nearby Lincoln and picked up takeout from Black Mountain Burger Co. The restaurant has a cozy pub atmosphere, but honestly, I just wanted to get back to the river.

I bought firewood from the self-service camp store and ate outside at the picnic table beside my cabin while my dog relaxed nearby.

Even though the cabins are relatively close together, they are carefully angled in a way that makes each one feel surprisingly private. I felt alone, but not too alone.

That evening, I purchased biofuel from the camp store for the indoor fireplace, and it created the most incredible ambiance inside the cabin. Between the fire, the river sounds, and the cozy bed, I slept unbelievably well.

The next morning, my dog and I headed back into Lincoln for breakfast at White Mountain Bagel Co. The hazelnut coffee and sesame bagel were exactly what I wanted before another day of hiking. After breakfast, we explored Quincy Bog Natural Area, which ended up being such a peaceful hidden gem.

On the drive home, we stopped at Biederman’s Deli & Pub for sandwiches, which we ate back at the river.

Lumen Nature Retreat is incredibly dog friendly. They even have a giant dog washing tub on site, which is very convenient after muddy hikes. I would definitely recommend bringing a tie-out so your dog can relax outside with you while you sit by the fire.

The property also has a large open lawn with games and a vending-style rental station where guests can borrow different yard games.

While there are activities available, the real draw of Lumen Nature Retreat is the atmosphere itself. It is quiet, calming, and restorative in a way that is increasingly hard to find.

There are several different lodging styles depending on the type of experience you want. In addition to the hygge cabins, they also offer beautiful A-frame tents and safari tents.

No matter which option you choose, the entire property feels thoughtfully designed to help guests slow down and reconnect with nature.

By the end of the weekend at Lumen Nature Retreat, I felt completely reset. Sitting beside the river with no agenda besides hiking, sauna sessions, and reading by the fire was exactly what I needed.

In fact, it was such a peaceful weekend that I briefly found myself wondering whether my family would notice if I simply never returned.
