The Field Guide Lodge in Stowe, Vermont is a boutique hotel run by Lark Properties. I fell for the modern rustic flare of the lobby and their astute attention to detail.
My husband and I have been leaning towards experiences over stuff. This past Christmas when my mother asked for gift ideas, we said we just wanted a gift card for Lark Hotels. We were so happy to receive them and immediately start planning a trip.
Lark Hotels is a small chain of boutique hotels that have a talent for picking the best locations and designing each property to be more unique than the next. We visited the Ale House Inn in Portsmouth, NH a few years back and loved it.
I loved the decor at the Field Guide. The lobby had little nooks and corners that you could happily settle into with a glass of wine or a group of friends. There was a coffee bar under the stairs, a large bar area and shuffle board.
Our room was in the Trail House building. Check out our Instagram stories for a full room tour. We had a King Suite which was so spacious! We entered into a living room with a couch, fireplace and private patio. The bedroom had a king-sized bed and a second flat screen television.
The bathroom had a large soaking tub with a real tree stump as a side table. Just the perfect size to hold a glass of wine! The hotel provided us with luxurious bath salts which were perfect for soothing achy muscles after a day on the slopes.
I loved that they provided us with sweet treats and soaps from small businesses. What a great way to give back to the community and help promote their products.
In the summer, there is a nice pool but it was closed for the season. There was a hot tub, which was available by reservation. You just had to text a number to reserve it. I found the hot tub to be in a strange location with very little privacy so we didn’t use it.
What I loved about this hotel was the location. While it was a little too far to walk into the village, the closer proximity to the mountain allows you to avoid the traffic jam that occurs when people are done skiing and there is only one road out of town.
We could walk across the street to our favorite breakfast place called the Skinny Pancake. And no, they are not carb-concious but actually serve up amazing crepes. The Bagel is also across the street which is another great breakfast/ lunch option. At night, we discovered The Backyard and loved their tacos with maple margaritas. My only complaint about our stay were the thin floors. On our second night, the people above us came in at 3 AM and then walked around the room until 6 AM. I don’t know what they were doing but it sounded like they were practicing for Riverdance and possibly brought a pet elephant. I really loved the hotel, so this wouldn’t stop me from returning. In the future, I would either request a room on the top floor or pack a sound machine.
I also have to throw in how important it is to have these little getaways with your partner. It is not easy! We had a spreadsheet of who goes where with what caretaker, charts for feeding the pets and who gets what medicine. It was enough to make my head spin and I can see why going away sometimes seems like it is more work than it is worth. But taking that time out to connect with a partner is just so important. I will break it to you now- the kids will be ok.
