After several months of use, I believe that the Fi dog collar is the best thing you can buy to keep your dog safe and to give you peace of mind.
When we adopted Finn, I knew I wanted some sort of tracker to keep tabs on him. A woman in town just had her dog get out of an open gate and it ran off. The dog was missing for two days and was found on a bog soaking wet and freezing cold but lucky to be alive.
I kept thinking if there had just been a tracker, the dog would have been home safe long before.
I started out by putting an Apple Air Tag on Finn. It seemed like a cheap and easy fix. But the locations it would give were far from accurate and it was heavy. Finn kept tripping on his leash because it pulled his collar down in front of him. I knew it bugged him, because he would try his best to bite it.
A total stranger recommended the Fi dog collar, so I checked it out. While the company did send us a free collar to try out, these are my honest thoughts.
Without the risk of sounding dramatic, the Fi dog Collar is life-changing. It brought me instant peace of mind when I am with or without my dog.
Setting up the Fi Dog Collar
There were four colors to choose from- blue, yellow, pink or grey. If you want something more splashy, there are approved third party vendors who craft high quality, custom-made collars.
I was very impressed with the look and feel of the collar. It is sleek, lightweight and the hardware is high quality metal.
The set up was quick and easy. After downloading the Fi App and connecting to WIFI, it was only a few steps on the phone to get it up and running.
I set his “geofence” around our home by creating a large circle around our house on the map. You can make it as big or small as you want, but if he steps outside of that safe zone, I will be alerted on my phone.
The app is so easy to use. On the “live” page, it will tell me Finn’s current location, what the level of battery life is and a timeline of his activities for the day.
The app maps out where he went on his walk and tracks his steps, distance walked and amount of time he was exercising. The app is so smart, it knows if Finn is with me or my husband or if he is without an owner. You can also add dog-walkers.
The charger is a small docking station that I keep on my kitchen counter. I only have to charge the collar once every two weeks. I will get a text notification as well as an email when the battery is at 20% and then again as it gets to 5%.
Fi Dog Collar App Features
My favorite feature is lost dog mode. I had to learn this one on the fly while we were traveling in Vermont. We were playing in the river with the kids when I suddenly realized that Finn was not beside me. Instant panic mode set in. I grabbed my phone and looked at his live location. I couldn’t believe how far he had gotten in a span of a few minutes.
Once in the live view, there is a red lost button. When you tap that, the app will increase location attempts to once per minute and activate a red pulsing LED light on the collar to make your dog easier to spot at night or in low visibility conditions.
Turns out, my dog made best friends with a ground hog in the field above us and wanted nothing more than to sneak away and be with him. I wouldn’t have even known which direction to start looking, but with the FI smart collar, I found him right away.
When I am on vacation without my dog, I love that I can check in on him to make sure he is at home or on a walk. If you have a pet sitter, you can even see how far of a walk they went on and for how long.
The Fi dog collar can do a lot more than what I talked about today, but these are the basics that I use every day. You can upload pictures of your pup and “follow” other dogs. Think of it as social media for dogs. It even tracks your dog’s sleep patterns.
