Dog Mountain Vermont: A Meaningful and Dog-Friendly Destination in St. Johnsbury

Location: St. Johnsbury, Vermont

Dog Mountain Vermont is a celebration of the bond between people and their dogs. Set against a beautiful landscape, this special place blends art, nature, and emotion in a way that stays with you long after your visit.

While the story behind Dog Mountain Vermont includes both triumph and heartbreak, it is ultimately a place rooted in love, connection, and community.

The Dog Chapel

Dog Mountain Vermont was created by artist Stephen Huneck, a woodcarver, furniture maker, and author whose life and work were deeply influenced by dogs. His career began unexpectedly when a passerby noticed one of his carvings and connected him with an art dealer.

Just as his career was gaining momentum, Stephen suffered a life-threatening fall that left him in a coma for two months. He later credited his recovery in part to the presence of his dogs, who visited him during that time. While recovering, he envisioned building a chapel dedicated to the spiritual connection between people and their dogs.

That vision became the Dog Chapel, the heart of Dog Mountain Vermont. The chapel welcomes all visitors with a simple message: all creeds, all breeds, no dogmas. Even the chapel includes a dog door, a small but meaningful detail that reflects its purpose.

Inside, the walls are covered with handwritten notes, photos, and tributes to beloved pets. The colorful stained glass and deeply personal messages create a powerful and emotional space that resonates with visitors of all ages.

Keeping Dog Mountain Alive

Dog Mountain Vermont faced significant challenges after the 2008 economic downturn. Stephen and his wife Gwen struggled to keep their galleries open and ultimately faced devastating personal losses.

In the years that followed, the local community came together to support Dog Mountain Vermont through fundraisers and art sales. Their efforts ensured that this meaningful place would continue to welcome visitors and honor the Hunecksโ€™ vision.

I have always loved his whimsical woodcuts, especially one called โ€œMenage a Trois,โ€ which shows two pairs of feet at the end of a bed with a dogโ€™s head tucked between them.

During their time of crisis, I decided to purchase the piece I had admired for so long as a way of supporting their fundraising efforts.

Now, every day as I walk past it, I canโ€™t help but smile as it reminds me of my animal-filled home. My eyes inevitably drift to the number beside his signature, 456 of 500, and I am mindful that I was fortunate enough to receive one of the last of his original works.

Visiting Dog Mountain Vermont

Today, Dog Mountain stands as a testament to resilience and the impact one idea can have on so many people.

A visit to Dog Mountain Vermont is unlike any other experience in New England. The property includes open fields, wooded trails, and a pond where dogs can run, explore, and play freely.

One of the greatest aspects of Dog Mountain Vermont is how welcoming it is for dogs. Off-leash exploration is encouraged, and small touches like baskets of tennis balls near the pond make it clear that this space was designed with dogs in mind.

Families will appreciate the easy trails and wide-open spaces, making it a great stop with kids. Whether you are visiting for a quick walk or planning to spend a few hours, Dog Mountain Vermont offers a relaxed and meaningful outing.

For many visitors, the highlight is stepping inside the Dog Chapel. It is a place to reflect, remember, and feel connected to others who have experienced the love of a pet.

In fact, my first pilgrimage to the Dog Chapel was when I lost my dog. It was the only place that I could go and feel understood. I have pinned my dog’s name on the walls of that chapel. I have cried in that chapel. That chapel has helped restore my faith in humanity. That chapel is doing exactly what Stephen Huneck always dreamed it would do.
