Discovery Museum in Acton: A Must Visit for Families
My kids have enjoyed visiting the Discovery Museum in Acton for years, and it is one place we find ourselves returning to again and again. They do such a great job of combining science and nature in a way that feels like pure play.
The Discovery Museum is a hands-on space that blends science, nature, and play. It encourages kids to explore, build, and imagine while learning along the way. The campus itself is beautiful, with both indoor exhibits and outdoor spaces that make it easy to spend an entire day here.
It is the kind of place where a membership quickly pays for itself because kids never seem to get tired of it.

A Day of Exploration at the Discovery Museum in Acton
In 2018, the Discovery Museum went through an $8.8 million renovation and expansion. We were excited to revisit and see what had changed.
What stood out right away was that the Discovery Museum kept all of the spaces kids already loved, like the train room, Bessieโs Diner, the backyard at night, and the ship room. Everything feels fresh, updated, and more open, but still familiar in the best way.

The Baby Room
One of the best additions to the Discovery Museum is the baby room, designed specifically for children ages three and under. It is a calm and inviting space that feels separate from the busier exhibits, which makes a big difference for little ones.
Lizzie loved climbing on the wooden play structures and caring for baby dolls. She spent time pushing them in a cart and showing them the rain out the window, which was such a sweet moment to watch. The space also includes a private nursing area that is clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed for parents.

Outdoor Play at the Discovery Museum
One of the highlights of the Discovery Museum is Discovery Woods, the outdoor nature area. This space includes an accessible treehouse, winding pathways, and plenty of opportunities for kids to connect with nature while they play.

This is where kids can really let loose. Mine spent so much time splashing in puddles, climbing through the โbeaver dam,โ and running around freely. It is the kind of outdoor space that encourages creativity and movement without feeling overly structured.
Special Programming at the Discovery Museum
The Discovery Museum also offers thoughtful programming for families. One standout is the โEspecially for Meโ program, which provides dedicated hours and free admission for families with developmental challenges, including autism, as well as those who are hearing or visually impaired.
This focus on accessibility and inclusion is something that really sets the Discovery Museum apart. It creates an environment where more families can feel comfortable and welcome.

Why Families Love the Discovery Museum
The Discovery Museum in Acton is such a special place for families. It blends education and play in a way that feels natural and engaging. Kids can move between indoor exhibits and outdoor exploration without missing a beat, which keeps them interested longer.
A visit to the Discovery Museum is more than just a day out. It is an experience that encourages curiosity, builds confidence, and gives kids the freedom to explore at their own pace. Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning for the tenth, the Discovery Museum continues to offer something new to discover each time.
