Deerfield Inn Review: A Historic Stay in Deerfield Massachusetts
The Deerfield Inn is more than just a place to stay, it is part of the experience of visiting Historic Deerfield. With its rich history, cozy interiors, and prime location right on Main Street, the Deerfield Inn offers families a chance to slow down and soak in the beauty of this timeless New England town.
As you turn down the main street in Deerfield, it feels like stepping back in time. Everything looks unspoiled and authentically New England. The wide, tree-lined streets feel like they belong in a movie set.
Hollywood has taken notice too, filming Little Women here in 1994.
This historic town, established near the Connecticut River in the 17th century during the colonial era, witnessed the infamous Raid on Deerfield in the 18th century.
During this event, French and Native American forces attacked the frontier settlement, devastating much of the town, resulting in the loss of 50 lives, and capturing over 100 individuals whom they took back to Canada.
Today, the entire village is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
Checking Into the Deerfield Inn
We checked into the Deerfield Inn, originally built in 1884, which has just 24 guest rooms. We arrived on a chilly day and were welcomed by a friendly innkeeper and a roaring fire. I loved the charming little office tucked under the staircase.
In the afternoon, cookies and tea were set out, and Harry happily worked on a giant jigsaw puzzle in the common area.
Each room at the Deerfield Inn is decorated with period antiques, and no two rooms are the same. The inn is rumored to be haunted, but luckily we didn’t have any unexpected guests in our room.
One thing to note for families is that fire code limits rooms to a maximum of three guests. While that can be tricky for larger families, the Deerfield Inn is perfect for a parent and child getaway like ours or for a couples trip.
Exploring Historic Deerfield
We were so excited to explore that we dropped our bags and immediately headed out to walk along Old Main Street. The Deerfield Inn is in the perfect location for exploring Historic Deerfield.
The visitor center is directly across the street, making it easy to pick up a map and purchase tickets. While anyone can walk through the village, admission is required to tour the historic homes and participate in workshops.
It was absolutely worth it. Harry learned how to write with a quill, tried weaving on a loom, and we watched a craftsman making wooden furniture. It was such a hands-on way to experience history.
Dining at the Deerfield Inn
When we returned, we headed straight to Champney’s Restaurant and Tavern, located on the ground floor of the Deerfield Inn. The large mahogany bar serves as the centerpiece of the tavern, surrounded by comfortable booths that create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
We tucked into a cozy corner and had a wonderful meal. Do not miss the truffle fries. They also offer a great children’s menu, which made it easy for families.
The next morning, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast included with our stay at the Deerfield Inn. This was not your typical continental breakfast. Harry had French toast with fresh strawberries, and I had eggs with home fries. The portions were generous and everything was delicious.
Final Thoughts on the Deerfield Inn
We spent another day wandering along historic Main Street. While there are many homes you can tour, my favorite part was simply walking through the village and along the Channing Blake Footpath.
You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy this quintessential New England town and the Deerfield Inn will only add to your experience.
