Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages is a quiet resort located in the heart of Cavendish, PEI. The inn sits adjacent to the Anne of Green Gables House and just a half hour drive from Charlottetown making it a great home base for exploring the island. While it is not oceanfront, there is a pathway leading straight to the Lake of Shining Waters.
What part of PEI should you stay?
The first decision you have to make when planning a trip to Prince Edward Island (PEI) is where you want to set up your home base. After thorough research, we decided on Cavendish, which has a central location on the northern coast. It is a family friendly area with endless activities for kids of all ages as well as easy access to the National Park and beaches.
Cavendish is only a 45 minute drive from the bridge and the central location makes day-tripping in either direction quite easy. Once we decided on Cavendish, I started researching where to stay and discovered the highly recommended Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages.
Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages, PEI
As a fan of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables books, I love that her influence can be found all over the island. Kindred Spirits is what Anne (with an E, of course) called her friends. It is very aptly named, as you will feel like you are visiting an old friend as you drive down the dirt road lined with purple loosestrife. While the Inn is centrally located right off of Route 6, it is set back in a quiet peaceful area.
Check in was a breeze. We were given a map of the property so we could find the location of our cottage. All of the cottages line the outskirts of a large green field. There is one dirt road that circles the 6 acre property and we could park right beside our cottage. We were in number 16 in the back left corner and my sister’s family was right across from us.
The cottages were perfect for our needs. They were very spacious and clean. Our deluxe cottage had two bedrooms, two bathrooms as well as a living room with a fire place and a pull out sofa.
The five of us had more than enough space. We turned the master bathroom into the baby’s room and set up her crib in there. The master had a kind sized bed with a television and the boys room had two beds with a nice view of the woods.
The kitchen was well-equipped with everything we needed to make our meals and there was a grill on the back deck.
Speaking of the back deck… this is where we all spent the most time, because our cottage had a hot tub! It was large enough to fit all of us comfortably. The weather in PEI was sunny and warm, but at night, the ocean carried a cool breeze and a dip in the tub was the perfect way to end the day. Not all of the cottages come with one, so if you are wondering if it is worth coughing up the extra cash, trust me, it is!
The cottages were the perfect balance of getting nice hotel amenities while having the independence of renting a house. While there was no house keeping that came around, they did provide us with clean towels each day and took out our trash. It was just enough. If we had any plumbing issues, the maintenance man showed up within 5 minutes.
Each and every morning, I would hear my son Harry hop out of bed and ask if he could go to the other cottage to see his cousins. I would hear the screen door slam, which always gave me a nostalgic memory of summer camp.
He loved feeling independent running over to their place on his own. He would then demand that my sister make him pancakes and play with him, which I loved because it meant that I got to sleep in for the first vacation ever.
Kindred Spirits has a large pool, a life sized chess set and a nice playground. There are always evening activities going on, such as campfires or cookies in the lobby.
The boys also loved borrowing DVDs from their large collection. Each cottage is equipped with a DVD player and they had every Anne of Green Gables episode ever made. We gave the kids a crash course on all things Anne before we visited the Green Gables house which is located just next door.
Another great thing about the location of Kindred Spirits is that there is a paved bike trail that leads right to the National Park beaches, which are just beautiful. It is about a 20 minute walk along the Lake of Shining Waters (another nod to Anne). It is the perfect place to spend the day relaxing in the sun, exploring the cliffs or watching the sunset.
At Kindred Spirits, you can rent anything from a hotel room or suite to a two or three bedroom cottage. The variety of options will make it easy to fit the needs of a solo traveler or a large family group.
Kindred Spirits Inn and Cottages has been owned and operated by the same family since 1986. The love and care they put into their operation is obvious. When I asked a fellow travel blogger who frequently visits PEI, she told me that Kindred Spirits is their home away from home.
Don’t expect any big fancy resorts on PEI, but that is what makes it so amazing. The coastline is pristine and waiting for you to discover it.
