Canoeing Concord River: A Family Friendly Adventure in Historic Concord MA
Canoeing the Concord River is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty and rich history of Concord, Massachusetts. This peaceful river offers families an easy outdoor adventure, with calm water, beautiful scenery, and just enough excitement to keep kids engaged from start to finish.
The best way to explore the Concord River is by canoe or kayak. From the launch, it takes just under an hour to reach the Old North Bridge, where the “shot heard round the world” was fired in 1775. Canoeing Concord River feels like more than just a day on the water because you are literally paddling through American history.
Beyond its historical significance, the river is filled with scenic views and abundant wildlife. It is the perfect place for a picnic on a sunny afternoon.
My family used to canoe the Concord River every summer. We would launch several canoes with my siblings, our friends, and whatever exchange student we were hosting at the time. My mother would pack a picnic lunch and we would catch and release turtles along the way.
One time, my brother disappeared ahead of us and we could not figure out where he had gone. As we paddled under a bridge, an entire cooler of ice water suddenly dumped over my head. It was pretty funny, even though we had nothing left to drink for the rest of the trip.
I have such fond memories of canoeing Concord River as a child that I could not wait to bring my own kids.
Canoeing Concord River

We set off from the South Bridge Boat House, which makes canoeing Concord River incredibly easy for families. They provide everything you need, including canoes, kayaks, paddles, and life jackets. They even help launch your boat, so all you have to do is hop in and start paddling.
The five of us fit comfortably in one canoe. James and I did most of the paddling while the kids relaxed and enjoyed the ride. The trip downstream is easy because you move with the current, while the return trip offers a bit more of a workout.
From the boat house to the Old North Bridge is about 1.5 miles and takes roughly 45 minutes each way. It is the perfect distance for families with kids because there is a clear destination to work toward without the paddle feeling overwhelming.
The river itself is wide and calm, with trees leaning over the water providing just the right amount of shade. As we paddled, we spotted kingfishers diving for fish, great blue herons stalking their prey, and turtles basking in the sun.
The kids loved passing under bridges, although their favorite part was when James intentionally steered us beneath low branches so I got smacked in the face.
The History Behind the Old North Bridge
One of the highlights of canoeing Concord River is reaching the Old North Bridge. This is where you can step out, stretch your legs, and turn your paddle into a history lesson.
On April 19, 1775, minutemen and militia faced off with British troops at the Old North Bridge during what would later become known as the Battle of Concord. This moment helped ignite the American Revolution.
“By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Near the Old North Bridge stands the famous Minute Man statue, which depicts a farmer leaving his plow behind to defend his home and freedom during the American Revolution. The bronze statue was created using melted Civil War cannons and has become one of Concord’s most recognizable landmarks.
Trivia: A “minuteman” was a colonial militiaman who pledged to be ready to fight at a minute’s warning.
The kids loved talking with a park ranger who helped bring the story to life. There was even a man dressed as a red coat who happily posed for pictures.

We also walked about a quarter mile to the visitor center, which has air conditioning, bathrooms, a small museum, and a gift shop. Be sure to look for the preserved plank from the original Old North Bridge displayed inside.
