Exploring The Bridge of Flowers and Glacial Potholes

Location: Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts

Shelburne Falls is a charming village that makes an easy and worthwhile stop when exploring Western Massachusetts. While The Bridge of Flowers is the main attraction, the entire town invites you to slow down and enjoy a relaxed stroll.

Small cafes, boutique shops, and yoga studios line the streets, giving the area a welcoming, laid-back feel. As you walk through town, you will even spot markers highlighting filming locations from movies like Labor Day and The Judge.

The Bridge of Flowers

The Bridge of Flowers is truly the highlight of any visit to Shelburne Falls. In the spring and summer, the bridge is filled with colorful blooms, turning what was once a trolley bridge into a living garden.

Visiting The Bridge of Flowers is free, though donations are appreciated to help maintain the gardens. The bridge runs parallel to Bridge Street and is easy to find right in the center of town.

It only takes about ten minutes to walk across and back, but you will likely linger longer to take in the flowers and river views. At the far end, the West End Pub is a great place to stop for lunch or a drink.

One important note for families traveling with pets: dogs are not allowed on The Bridge of Flowers, so plan accordingly.

Glacial Potholes

Just a short walk from The Bridge of Flowers, you will find another unique natural attraction. At the base of Salmon Falls, there are more than 50 glacial potholes that formed over 14,000 years ago as swirling water and stones carved into the rock.

These formations are considered one of the largest collections of glacial potholes in the world, making this a fascinating stop for kids and adults alike. If you look closely, you can also see light and dark bands in the rock that date back to when the supercontinent Pangaea existed over 300 million years ago.

While visitors used to swim and relax on the rocks, the area is now closed to swimming due to safety concerns. Even so, it remains a beautiful and memorable place to explore.

Where to Stop in Town

If you are planning to spend a little more time in Shelburne Falls, there are a few great local spots to check out. Baked is perfect for breakfast, coffee, or a sweet treat. The Shelburne Arts Co-op is a fun stop to browse handmade crafts and pottery created by local artists.

There is also a helpful visitors center in town where you can pick up maps and learn more about the area. The people of Shelburne Falls are so friendly- I didnโ€™t pass a single person who didnโ€™t say hello.

If you are driving along Route 2, it is well worth taking a break to explore The Bridge of Flowers and the glacial potholes. This is an easy, family-friendly stop that combines natural beauty, a bit of history, and small-town charm.

Whether you are visiting during peak bloom season or just passing through, The Bridge of Flowers is one of those simple stops that ends up being a highlight of the day.
