The Bowery is a street and neighborhood in the southern portion of the New York City borough of Manhattan. While it was once known for cheap bars and derelicts, it is now a trendy area filled with bars and restaurants.
During my recent stay at the Sohotel in the lower East side of Manhattan, I tried to eat at a different place for each meal. Here is a list of my favorite Bowery restaurants. These places are all within walking distance of the Sohotel.
1. Casa Bocado
I had a day from hell getting into the city. The kind of day that only tacos can make better. Not to sound like an utter alcoholic, but their mojito was medicinal. Don’t miss the churro sundae. It is as pretty as it is delicious.
2. Baz Bagel
You can’t not eat a bagel in NYC. For an authentic diner experience, sit at a bar stool at Baz. Its the kind of place where they serve breakfast all day and constantly top up your coffee. I am still dreaming of their pumpernickel everything bagel and long list of cream cheese flavors.
3. The Egg Shop
This bright sunlit breakfast joint has a modern yet retro feel. I had the ricotta scramble which was a soft scramble with ricotta, arugula sprouts, chives, truffle oil and chili flakes on perfectly grilled sourdough toast. I’m drooling just thinking about it.
4. The Butcher’s Daughter
Vegans and vegetarians will swoon over this plant-based restaurant, cafe, juice bar and “
The variety of food in New York City is incredible. I wish I could just eat my way across the whole city. These Bowery restaurants were no exception. I just love that popping into a tiny hole in the wall can turn into an adventure.
