There is nothing better than riding along the coast of Cape Cod or grabbing an ice cream cone off of a rail trail. Here is a list of the best bike gear for kids to get your summer rolling.
1. The Burley Bee
This amazing contraption hooks on to the back of your bike so you can easily pull your kids behind you. They love climbing into their little nest and zipping up into it. There is a bug screen and a plastic shield that rolls down in case it rains. It even has a tiny trunk for their things.
If you are riding near a road, you can put the flag up to warn drivers that you are carrying precious cargo. The best part is that the ride is so smooth, it usually lulls them to sleep. I have heard of many people who bought a cheaper brand and it was so terrible, they ended up selling it to buy a Burley. If the price tag is too high, check out Craigslist. And PS- they have one for dogs :).
2. Thule RideAlong
We also have a Thule RideAlong bike carrier since we have too many kids to fit in a Burley. I did a lot of research when I purchased this because there are loads of these carriers on the market. This one had great safety reviews and I like the leg protection it provides in case of a fall.
3. Trek Bicycles
My boys are really getting into riding themselves. We just purchased them Trek bikes and they are amazing! We have had cheaper bikes in the past but they really didn’t show much interest in them. These bikes are worth the money because you will not get your kid off of them.
My three year old is riding the Precaliber 16 Boy’s Bike and I love that it has a handle on the back of his seat. It makes it so easy to catch him when he gets nervous about going too fast. The handle is also great for when you take the training wheels off and they need a little guidance. This bike has pedal brakes and removable training wheels.
My six year old is riding the Precaliber 20 Boy’s Bike which is a perfect transition bike for someone still learning. This bike not only has pedal brakes but also a handle brake so they can start getting used to it. My son will be able to ride this bike for years. If you don’t value your sanity, get them a bugle horn.
4. kids Helmets
Speaking of bike riding, you will now need a good helmet. My favorite helmets for kids are Nutcase Helmets. Not only are they super cute with their quirky patterns but they are so comfortable, that your child will actually want to wear it which is key. My 18 month old wears a Baby Nutty and the boys wear Little Nutties.
5. Landry’s Bicycle Shop
In my opinion, Landry’s is the best bike store in all of New England. The staff is knowledgeable and patient. They have the best selection of bikes and will let you try out any bike in the parking lot. I wouldn’t buy a bike anywhere else!
