Lisbon, Portugal, with its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and vibrant culture, is a dream destination for any traveler. As you plan your visit to this enchanting city, one crucial decision awaits – where to stay? Embracing the local lifestyle and immersing yourself in the heart of Lisbon is best achieved through the unique experience of renting an Airbnb.
First let’s explore some key considerations to help you choose the perfect Airbnb for your Lisbon adventure.
1. Location, Location, Location
Lisbon is a city of hills, each neighborhood offering its own distinct character. Consider what kind of experience you desire – the historic charm of Alfama, the bohemian vibe of Bairro Alto, or the prime location of Chiado. Choose a location that aligns with your interests and allows you to explore the city easily.
Lisbon is divided into several neighborhoods or districts:
- Baxia and Chiado– these neighborhoods are usually grouped together due to their proximity. The location is central, making it a perfect home base for exploring the city
- Alfama is the historic heart of the city. There are narrow cobblestone streets to wander. It is very charming, but also very hilly.
- Bairro Alto is the place for nightlife. We stayed here and although our Airbnb was adorable, we were up all night because it was so loud. Personally, I would visit here but not stay in this neighborhood.
2. Authenticity and Charm
One of the primary reasons travelers opt for Airbnb is the opportunity to stay in a place that reflects the local culture. Look for accommodations with authentic Portuguese decor, local artwork, and a cozy atmosphere that makes you feel like a true Lisboeta. This personal touch adds a layer of authenticity to your stay.
3. Amenities for Comfort
Assess your needs and preferences when it comes to amenities. Whether it’s a fully equipped kitchen, a balcony with a view, or a comfortable workspace, make a checklist of the amenities that will enhance your stay. We really wanted a terrace to take in the sunset views. I will mention that Lisbon has beautiful historic buildings, but that means… no elevators. We had to walk five flights to get to our Airbnb, but the sea view off the terrace was worth the effort. Most Airbnbs that I looked at did not have an elevator.

4. Read Reviews
Airbnb is built on trust, and reviews from previous guests are invaluable. Take the time to read through feedback about the property, host responsiveness, cleanliness, and overall experience. Real-life experiences shared by fellow travelers can provide valuable insights into what to expect.
5. Budget Considerations
Lisbon offers a wide range of Airbnb options to suit different budgets. Determine your spending limit and explore listings that not only fit your financial constraints but also offer good value for money.
6. Safety and Security
Prioritize your safety by choosing a property in a secure neighborhood. Additionally, consider properties with secure access, reliable locks, and positive safety reviews. Your peace of mind is essential for fully enjoying your time in Lisbon.
