Bass Hole Boardwalk: A Hidden Gem on Cape Cod for Families
If you are looking for a unique and family friendly spot on Cape Cod, the Bass Hole boardwalk in Yarmouth Port is one you do not want to miss. Stretching out over a scenic salt marsh, this hidden gem offers beautiful views, easy access to Gray’s Beach, and plenty of space for kids to explore.
Whether you visit at high tide or low tide, the Bass Hole boardwalk delivers a completely different experience each time.
Bass Hole Boardwalk
The Bass Hole boardwalk stretches out over a wide salt marsh, offering a different experience depending on the tide. At low tide, kids will love watching tiny crabs scurry across the marsh. At high tide, the Bass Hole boardwalk feels like it is floating over the water.
No matter when you visit, the views are beautiful. Keep an eye out for the osprey nest, where you might spot a mama bird tending to her chicks. Walking the Bass Hole boardwalk is a peaceful experience and one that feels different from your typical Cape Cod beach.
Sandbars at Gray’s Beach
Gray’s Beach, located right next to the Bass Hole boardwalk, is a small crescent-shaped beach with lifeguards on duty during the summer.
When the tide goes out, wide sandbars appear, creating the perfect space for kids to explore, dig, and play. The shallow water and natural channels also make this a great spot for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding.
When the tide comes in, conditions can change quickly. There are posted warnings about rip currents and even sharks, so it is important to stay aware and check the tide schedule before your visit.

Picnic Area and Playground
Right at the entrance to the Bass Hole boardwalk, you will find a shaded picnic area with grills. It is a great place to relax or enjoy lunch, especially if you plan to spend a few hours here. Larger groups can reserve the space in advance.
The playground is simple but fun for younger kids. There are also benches tucked into shady areas and a small open field that is perfect for tossing a frisbee or letting kids run around.

Clean Bathrooms
One of the most appreciated features at Bass Hole is the clean bathroom facility located between the beach and picnic area. Having access to running water and proper restrooms makes a big difference when visiting with kids.

Free Parking
Free parking at Cape Cod beaches is rare, which makes this one of the biggest perks of visiting the Bass Hole boardwalk. Many nearby beaches charge daily fees, so this is a nice bonus, especially if you are just stopping by for a short visit.
During our midweek visit after the Fourth of July, the lot was only half full. However, this spot is becoming more popular, and the town has started enforcing parking rules more strictly. Once the lot fills up, cars parked illegally may be towed, so plan accordingly.
And if you get lucky, you might even catch the ice cream truck waiting nearby, which is always a highlight for kids.
Why You Should Visit the Bass Hole Boardwalk
The Bass Hole boardwalk offers a little bit of everything: beautiful scenery, space for kids to explore, and easy access to a calm beach. It is one of those places that feels special without requiring a big commitment of time or planning.
Whether you are walking the Bass Hole boardwalk, exploring the sandbars, or enjoying a picnic, this is a spot that families will want to return to again and again.
