Just before I had my baby, I took myself on a babymoon. I just needed a breather. I was in the 2 under 2 club, about to enter the even nuttier 3 under 3 club. I knew our lives were about to change in a big way and I wanted to take some time to myself to reflect. I have never done a spa day and this mama needed to see what it was all about. And let me tell you, I found heaven!
The Saybrook Spa is in Old Saybrook, CT which was just over an hour and a half drive from Central Mass. My husband got me a spa package for Mother’s Day, so I did the ‘pick 2 package,’ which included a Swedish Massage, express facial and $25 lunch voucher. I also got my nails done.
I headed straight for the Sanno Spa when I got there. There was a really posh locker room to change into a robe and then I sipped on cucumber water in the cozy waiting room. I was greeted by a nice lady who would be taking care of me for the day. I was pretty pregnant so I couldn’t lie on my stomach but she worked around it. I loved the spa rooms. I have never had a massage in almost complete darkness but it was so relaxing I almost passed out. Just having someone rub my swollen feet felt glorious.
My facial was also lovely. They used Eminence Organic Skin Line, which I fell in love with and ended up buying a few of their products. The whole spa was so tranquil and I left there feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I hadn’t been pampered like that in my life!
For lunch, I went to the inn’s waterfront restaurant, Fresh Salt. The food was amazing and you can’t beat this view! I then wandered the docks and looked at the mega-yachts imagining what it must be like to be that wealthy. I loved the animal carvings along the pier.
My room was luxurious and spacious. Definitely the most well-appointed room I have even stayed in. I had a slider that opened up to the pool area and waterfront. It was so nice to get that sea breeze and smell the ocean air.
The next morning, I got breakfast in bed which is just my favorite thing to do at a hotel. There is nothing better!
Their Health club has a fitness center, steam room, sauna, indoor and outdoor pool as well as a whirlpool. I read a book by the outdoor pool and just laid in the sun before I had to head home and face reality. There was a house to clean and diapers to change. And of course, since I can’t escape it, I had to help rescue a rooster on my way home, because what would a trip be if I didn’t come home with a chicken on my lap!
Side note: when people buy chicks, they can’t tell what sex they are. Most towns do not allow roosters so many of the males are discarded. This one was dumped on a busy road and my brother was able to catch him. The rooster now lives happily at Holiday Farm.
Old Saybrook is a lovely area, although I didn’t explore much of it. This trip was about relaxing and so I did just that. I did walk around a pretty board walk that went through a marsh across from the hotel. There is a nice town center with lots of shops to meander. Old Saybrook is home to the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, Harvey’s Beach, General William Hart House, the Lynde Point Lighthouse and 30 Mile Brewing Co. It definitely deserves another trip. I would love to return with friends for a girls weekend. It would be a great romantic getaway as well. I am most interested in their new Eagle Cruise Package where you will explore the Connecticut River with a naturalist in search of bald eagles.
